Babes/SBE Luncheon on Wednesday Jan 28th, 2004

Our speaker this month will be Greg Morton of E2V Technologies and he will do a presentation on the multi-stage depressed collector IOT which has improved operating efficiency over its predecessor, with no discernable change in other operating performance parameters.

There is increasing likelihood that analog transmission will last longer than originally anticipated. With this in mind, work was undertaken to establish whether this new product offers the same benefits in analog operation.

Practical test results on three- and five-stage collector IOTs are presented and the practicalities of depressed collector IOT operation are discussed for both digital and analog use. A comparison is made with the performance of conventional IOTs operating at similar powers, along with a discussion of the demands placed on the various tube types in terms of collector power dissipation and cooling requirements. Implications for the characteristics of power supplies required for the various collector stages are also discussed.

As usual, our luncheon will be at Sinbad's just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission St. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30. To make reservations call Paul Black at 925-827-9511 and leave a message on his machine.

Mary-Liz Lincoln Dies

Mary-Liz Lincoln, wife of the late Don Lincoln, died on Thanksgiving day, Nov 27th. The obit did not list a cause other than to say it was sudden.

Mary-Liz was a widow and Don a widower when they got married. They had been family friends when their late spouses were alive. Don's daughter Penny, office manager at Sutro Tower, died in February of 2001. Dan was the retired manager of Sutro Tower and he died in December of 2001.

Our State With the State

When chapter 40 incorporated we did so as a non-profit organization. Sofar, translating that into a tax-exempt organization has eluded us. We are now into the third restatement of our charter in an attempt to obtain a form that will make the tax authorities happy. The downside is that until we become tax exempt, we may have to pay a minimum corporate tax of $800 even though on an operating basis we usually lose money. It looks like we will be in the clear for 2001 and 2002. We may be forced to pay for 2003. It is fortunate that we changed to an electronic newsletter from a printed one because the money saved will just about cover the cost of this tax. Well keep you up to date on this matter.

Treasurer's Report
SBE Chapter 40 year 2003
In 2004 we anticipate an expense of $250 to $500 to move our website to a commercial web host so that we won't have to rely on Tim Pozar's server running all the time. Tim will still be involved but Tim's home hardware won't be carrying the files.
